MicroPilot’s Celebrates Its 15th Birthday

June 5, 2009

MicroPilot is pleased to celebrate its 15th year as the world leader in miniature autopilots for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and micro aerial vehicles (MAV).

Great ideas can hit you when you least expect it, just ask Howard Loewen, President of MicroPilot. As a pilot, Loewen was frustrated by the wasted energy it took for a tow plane to pull up his sailplane high enough to catch the right air currents. With a background in electrical engineering, applied mathematics and computer science he decided to apply his profession to his passion for flying.

“I thought the best way to develop and test a solution would be to create and unmanned tow plane, Howard explained, and MicroPilot was born”.

Since 1994, MicroPilot has been designing miniature autopilots using low COTS GPS receivers and mems rate sensors. From the start MicroPilot autopilots were lightweight and compact. In 2002, MicroPilot introduced the innovative MP2x28g. Weighing only 28 grams it set the benchmark for MicroPilot’s full line of UAV autopilots, accessories, customization, HORIZON ground control software and training at our 40 acre flight facility.

With over 500 clients in 60 countries, MicroPilot’s low cost MP2128HELI flies helicopters, VTOL and fixed wing. For triple redundancy, MP2128HELI3x for helicopters and MP2x283x for fixed wing. In 2008, MicroPilot released MP-trueHWIL Matlab-based hardware in the loop electrically simulates all sensors, providing the highest fidelity autopilot simulation available.

MicroPilot has been supplying UAV autopilots for 15 years and is now proudly ISO 9001:2000 Certified. Howard Loewen stated.

“To celebrate 15 years in any business is an accomplishment. To be a leader in UAV industry is remarkable and we are very proud of our company”.
